چکیده

Microfluidics device are used to study the drainage of a wetting fluid by a non-wetting one in porous media. Both the geometry and the wetting properties are accurately controlled and allow to obtain quantitative measurements of the features of the capillary fingering occuring during the invasion as a function of the imposed flow rate. In partial wetting systems, a quantitative agreement is found between the experimental mean velocities, a simple model based on scaling arguments, and some simulations based on a pore network model. In total wetting systems, the correlation length is higher than predicted in the capillary regime. Furthermore, a very different behavior is observed after the percolation, the invasion process do not stop in total wetting systems whereas the structure of the flow is frozen in partial wetting ones.

Linking drainage front morphology with gaseous diffusion in unsaturated porous media: a lattice Boltzmann study.

The effect of drainage front morphology on gaseous diffusion through partially saturated porous media is analyzed using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Flow regimes for immiscible displacement in porous media have been characterized as stable displacement, capillary fingering, and viscous fingering. The dominance of a flow regime is associated with the relative magnitudes of gravity, viscou...

Relative permeability and capillary pressure functions of porous media as related to the displacement growth pattern

Visualization experiments of the unsteady immiscible displacement of a fluid by another are performed on glass-etched pore networks of well-controlled morphology by varying the fluid system and flow conditions. The measured transient responses of the fluid saturation and pressure drop across the porous medium are introduced into numerical solvers of the macroscopic two-phase flow equations to e...

Competition of gravity, capillary and viscous forces during drainage in a two-dimensional porous medium, a pore scale study

We have studied experimentally and numerically the displacement of a highly viscous wetting fluid by a non-wetting fluid with low viscosity in a random two-dimensional porous medium under stabilizing gravity. In situations where the magnitudes of the viscous-, capillaryand gravity forces are comparable, we observe a transition from a capillary fingering behavior to a viscous fingering behavior,...

Steady-state two-phase flow in porous media: statistics and transport properties.

We study experimentally the case of steady-state simultaneous two-phase flow in a quasi-two-dimensional porous media. The dynamics is dominated by the interplay between a viscous pressure field from the wetting fluid and bubble transport of a less viscous, nonwetting phase. In contrast with more studied displacement front systems, steady-state flow is in equilibrium, statistically speaking. The...

Direct simulations of two-phase flow on micro-CT images of porous media and upscaling of pore-scale forces

Pore-scale forces have a significant effect on the macroscopic behaviour of multiphase flow through porous media. This paper studies the effect of these forces using a new volume-of-fluid based finite volume method developed for simulating two-phase flow directly on micro-CT images of porous media. An analytical analysis of the relationship between the pore-scale forces and the Darcy-scale pres...
